Happy End of the School Year
And dissertation publishing time!
Hi all,
So far I have not seen much research come across my feed about continuation schools this year. If you know of some share, and I will share out and summarize the findings. However, one did cross my path today and it is fully readable (no paywall).
Perspectives of Continuation High School Black Students on Their Sense of School Belonging and Experiences With School-Based Mentoring
This research highlights asset based approaches, specifically with culture as social capital.
The author shares the unfair funding restraints we face with the same, but accelerated expectations, and only half of the ADA.
This is done through a social justice lens with the perspective of the Black student experience.
There is some research cited in the document that I will read over summer, however the key takeaways that spoke to me are:
The importance of a active, engaged, and supportive school counselor that coordinated connection (i.e. affinity spaces)
Engaging, teachers that showed interest in students that provided student leadership opportunities
Strong school leadership with formalized mentorship, creating systems and structures that support student connection, and equity-minded practices.
Of course, there are more gems in this research. Let me know some touch points for you :)
Happy Summer reading!
